In furtherance of its capacity building efforts to tackle various internal security challenges in the Country, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has graduated another set of 6 pilots in tactical and basic flying. The combined graduation ceremony, which took place today, 29 September 2020, comprised 2 pilots of the Tactical Flying Course 24 (Batch B), and 4 student pilots of the Basic Flying Course 19 (Batch A). Among the graduands awarded Limited Combat Rating Certificate after completing the Tactical Flying Course on the Alpha Jet aircraft during today’s ceremony was the first female fixed-wing fighter pilot in the history of the NAF, Flying Officer Kafayat Sanni.
In his remarks at the graduation ceremony, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, who was also the Guest of Honour, noted that human capacity development, being one of the Key Drivers of his Vision, has received much attention since he assumed office as the Twentieth Chief of the Air Staff. “This is evident in the number of personnel that have been trained in various courses, both locally and overseas. Indeed, today’s graduation brings the total number of new pilots winged since 2015 to 118, and by the end of 2020, the NAF would have completed the training and winging of 139 pilots, which is a glowing testament to the efficacy of our capacity building initiatives. These pilots have continued to add value to the efforts of the Service in dealing with security challenges in the North East, North West and other parts of the country” he said. The CAS further stated that, while a good number of NAF officers were undergoing various pilot training courses outside the country, the indigenous training institutions had continued to play a crucial role towards the attainment of the NAF’s capacity building initiatives. He expressed satisfaction that 403 Flying Training School, Kano and 407 Air Combat Training Group, Kainji, where the graduands were trained, had continued to set the pace in the provision of high-quality fighter pilot training.
While encouraging the 4 newly winged pilots, the CAS reminded them that they cannot afford to rest on their oars at this time, as the feat they had achieved also comes with a burden of responsibility with so much expected of them, not only by the NAF but indeed the Nigerian people, whose scarce resources were used to train them. He therefore urged them to continue to give their best to the Service and the Nation. While addressing the operational pilots, Air Marshal Abubakar, stated that their 18 months was deliberately made tedious with series of training sorties and several tactical maneuvers executed to the high standards expected of NAF fighter pilots. According to him, “all these were aimed at giving you the requisite skills to prepare you for the tasks ahead. I must emphasize that, now that you have earned your Limited Combat Rating, you will be required to work harder and fly with more precision in order to meet up with the expectations of Nigerians in the various operational theatres. There shall be no hiding place for armed bandits or terrorists in any of our forests” he assured.
The CAS expressed particular delight that Flying Officer Sanni, who was decorated with her pilot wings as the first female fixed-wing fighter pilot in the history of the NAF on 15 October 2019, had made history yet again, by successfully completing the Tactical Flying Training on the Alpha Jet aircraft. He noted that Flying Officer Sanni and her colleagues were now better trained and prepared to be deployed for combat missions in the ongoing counter-insurgency air operations in the North-East and other parts of the country. “You will go down in the history of our Nation as the first female fixed-wing fighter pilot to undertake combat missions in defence of our freedom and sacred values. You will be undertaking combat missions to assert our right to our territory and protect the lives and property of our people”, the CAS added.
Air Marshal Abubakar further noted that the NAF’s ability to effectively and efficiently project Air Power has also been significantly enhanced by the Federal Government’s support in the areas of platforms acquisition and reactivation as well as training and approval to expand NAF’s field units. He therefore appreciated the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari for his unflinching support to the NAF. The CAS also appreciated the National Assembly, especially the Chairmen and members of the Senate and House Committees on Air Force for their continued support to the Service.

The Lagos State Government is proposing the sum of $2.2 billion for the construction of the 37.4 kilometres 4th Mainland Bridge.
Upon completion, the bridge would have 2 x 4 lane carriageway cross-sectional road with allowance for BRT Lane and future road expansion.
It would also become the longest Bridge in Africa second only to the 6th October Bridge in Cairo, Egypt, featuring three toll plazas, nine interchanges, 4.5Km Lagoon Bridge, Rest and Service Areas and an eco- friendly environment amongst other added features.
800 houses are also expected to go when construction begins against the 4,000 houses earlier marked for demolition in the previous design before it was realigned.
Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu disclosed this Tuesday at the first stakeholders meeting on Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) for the bridge held at Adeyemi Bero Hall, Ikeja .
The freeway bridge is subdivided into three sections namely Island Section, Lagoon Section and Mainland Section.
It starts at the Abraham Adesanya Roundabout in Lekki where a “free flow” interchange will be constructed as well as some traffic flow alterations to the existing Lekki – Epe Expressway so as to maintain traffic movements during construction.
Sanwo-Olu, represented by his deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat , said the event is very significant in the state’s joint effort to change the narrative of the socio-economic development of the state through the provision of critical infrastructure for sustainable prosperity.
He stressed that the 4th Mainland Bridge project was deliberately included during their electioneering campaign as a key deliverable in their manifesto.
As an administration, he said, the government decided to upgrade the project and develop a method to deliver “this strategic piece of highway infrastructure and have since left no one in doubt about our commitment to ensure that this project becomes a reality.”
According to him, the history of the 4th Mainland Bridge project goes back almost 15 years when it was first raised due to the ever-decreasing efficiency of the existing 3rd Mainland Bridge in addressing the transportation needs of a growing population.
The 3rd Mainland Bridge , he said, was the first real piece of strategic infrastructure deployed in Lagos Metropolis and the proponents and developers of that project should be commended for their vision. Lagos today without the 3rd Mainland bridge is simply unimaginable.
Hamzat stressed that engagement and consultation on Environmental and Social impact assessment is a precursor to the third step which will involve issuing a “Request for Proposal” (RfP), to the six Consortia who will be required to present their respective financial proposals and methodologies for carrying out the project. It will be concluded with the selection of the “Preferred Bidder” and “2 Reserved Bidders”.
He urged stakeholders to use the meeting to consult amongst themselves on the steps to take in order to remove all the bottlenecks that may impede the delivery of 4th Mainland Bridge.
All the components of Lagos mobility, he said must be considered, including Road planning, public transport integration and urban freight;
Strengthening the current radial commuting connections towards Lagos urban core and the establishment of transversal connections that will serve both long distance traffic (avoiding the metropolitan traffic) and also other connections within the Megacity which are not Lagos bound.
He assured that the proposed 4th Mainland Bridge project has been well integrated into the overall Lagos Master Plan in relation to Transportation Infrastructure. The project allows for the first time “direct access” from the large suburb of Ikorodu to the Island and the Lekki Free Trade Zone are

Somebody will look for your attention and however you won’t give him any but when things starts getting better for him, you return and start looking for consideration. Anyway, it’s left for Laycon to settle on her case if genuinely he even knows her.

36 state Governors drag President Buhari to court.

President Muhammadu Buhari has been dragged to Supreme Court by thirty six state governors (36) over his Presidential Executive Order No. 00-10 of 2020 signed in May, 2020.
The states averred that the executive order Buhari signed had pushed the Federal Government’s responsibility of funding both the capital and recurrent expenditures of the state high courts, Sharia Court of Appeal and the Customary Court of Appeal, to the state governments.
They equally argued that except paying the salaries of judicial officers of the above-mentioned courts, Buhari had since 5 May 2009, abandoned his responsibility of funding the capital and recurrent expenditure of the respective courts.

“Since the 5th of May 2009, the defendant had not funded the capital and recurrent expenditures of the state high courts, Sharia Court of Appeal and the Customary Court of Appeal of the plaintiffs’ states, apart from paying only the salaries of the judicial officers of the said courts.
“The plaintiffs’ states have been solely responsible for funding the capital and recurrent expenditures of the state high courts, Sharia Court of Appeal and the Customary Court of Appeal of the plaintiffs’ states, which the defendant has failed and/or refused to fund”

Togo’s President Faure Gnassingbe on Monday named the first-ever female prime minister to head the government in the West African nation.

Victoire Tomegah Dogbe, 60, replaces Komi Selom Klassou, who resigned on Friday.

A close ally of the president, she has served as his chief-of-staff since 2009.

Togo had been due for a government reshuffle since Gnassingbe was elected a second time in February for a fourth term in office, but the changes were delayed by the coronavirus pandemic.

The president’s election win, which came after a legal change allowing him to run, extended more than a half-century of dynastic rule by the Gnassingbe family over the former French colony.

The victory was disputed by the main opposition challenger, who has faced official harassment in the wake of the vote.

The president has led the country of eight million people since taking over in 2005 since the death of his father Gnassingbe Eyadema, who ruled for 38 years.

Togo’s economy has been hit by the pandemic as the authorities have imposed restrictions to limit the spread of the virus

Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has suspended its planned nationwide strike that would have started today, Monday, September 28, in protest against the hike in pump price of fuel and electricity tariff.
Earlier, there were indications that the Federal Government and NLC might reach an agreement to avert the looming nationwide strike.
The Minister of State, Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo(SAN) tweeted that there was hope the industrial crisis might be avoided.
He stated on his verified Twitter handle(@fkeyamo): “Still negotiating with labour at exactly 12.34am. Some progress have been made. Concrete proposals on the table from both sides.
“Details being worked on by the temporary Secretariat. Gradually moving towards a point of convergence. Let’s hope….”
Furthermore, a source told Vanguard that it is possible the tariff will be suspended for two weeks, but said nothing specific about fuel pump price.
The source also said a joint government/Labour committee will be set up to review the issues within those two weeks.
Vanguard also learned that a communique is being hammered out, an indication that some sort of agreement had been arrived at.

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has finally lifted the suspension order it earlier placed on telecoms masts and towers in Abuja metropolis.

The FCTA has therefore asked telecoms operators to commence fresh moves to regularise, update and settle all outstanding bills on their masts and towers to enable them resume installation of masts and towers in the territory.

Relieved of the burden of the suspension of telecoms masts installation in Abuja, the Chairman of the Association of Licenced Telecoms Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), Mr. Gbenga Adebayo, told THISDAY that the suspension order would enable telecoms operators resume telecoms masts and other telecoms infrastructure rollout in Abuja, a situation, he said would address the issue of poor telecoms services in Abuja and its environ, having suffered from poor telecoms service delivery in the territory since the suspension order in February this year.

The FCT Administration had on February 3, 2020, placed a suspension order for the installation of telecoms masts and towers in the federal capital territory and communicated same to all telecoms operators through a letter.

In a recent letter dated September 25, 2020, written to all telecoms operators through their association, ALTON, which was obtained by THISDAY, the FCT Administration lifted the suspension order and asked telecoms operators to commence masts installation after seeking the necessary approvals.

Part of the letter with reference No: FCDA/ES/460/Vol.1, which was signed by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Capital Territory Administration, Olusade Adesola, read: “I wish to refer to our letter dated February 3, 2020, which conveyed the suspension of the grant of permits for the erection of telecoms masts/towers in the FCT and the series of correspondences by you dated April 30, July 14, and September 8, 2020, wherein you appealed for reconsideration of the directive to facilitate prompt resumption of the issuance of the build permit process.

“After carefully studying your concerns, the FCT Administration is delighted to convey the lifting of the suspension of the processing/grant of permits for telecoms masts and towers in the FCT, with effect from the date of this letter.”

Since taking power in 2012, Chinese President Xi Jinping has helped secured China’s position as a global superpower — and pushed forward a serious foreign policy, making bolder moves in several key flashpoints across Asia.

From the South China Sea to the Himalayan Sino-Indian border, and even in one of its own cities, China has doubled down on its claims of territory, and taken a harder line in response to perceived challenges.

And as those disputes escalated this year with renewed and rising tensions, Xi has bulked up the military and increased its budget, with the instruction to “resolutely safeguard national sovereignty, security and development interests.”

Here’s what you need to know about China’s key flashpoints in the Asia-Pacific region.

Dotted with small islands, reefs and shoals, the South China Sea is a crucial global shipping route and home to a messy territorial dispute.

China claims it owns almost all of the 1.3 million square mile South China Sea, but at least six other governments also have overlapping territorial claims in the contested waterway: the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei and Taiwan.

The United States doesn’t have any claims in the waters, but has repeatedly challenged China’s claims.

China went ahead and built islands anyway:Since 2014, China has turned numerous obscure reefs and sandbars — far from its shoreline — into man-made artificial islands heavily fortified with missiles, runways and weapons systems, prompting outcry from the other governments.

The US and its allies have pushed back by sailing warships through the South China Sea close to features claimed or occupied by China, in what it calls freedom of navigation operations (FONOPS). They say such patrols enforce the right of free passage in international waters; China argues these are violations of its sovereignty

Our quest to take development to the grassroots and meet the specific needs of our people took off today with the flag off of the construction of roads, jetties and power projects.
The state-wide 377-ward projects are intervention projects in grassroot development.
The projects are conceived in response to the needs of the people. They are diverse because they reflect the needs of each ward across the state.
The implementation of the projects will commence immediately after the flag-off, as contractors have been mobilized to move to site.
I urge residents who are the ultimate beneficiaries of these projects to take ownership by monitoring the implementation process and ensure that the job conforms to the quality and standard specified in the project design.

Chadian soldiers killed 20 Boko Haram jihadists and freed 12 civilians, including nine children, kidnapped in the Lake Chad area where several countries’ borders meet, the government said Friday.
The jihadist group, which originated in Nigeria in 2009, has established bases on islets dotting Lake Chad, a vast swampy expanse on the border between Nigeria, Chad, Niger and Cameroon.
It has stepped up attacks in the area in recent months.
On September 17, Boko Haram fighters raided a village in the restive zone and kidnapped the civilians, Communications Minister and government spokesman Cherif Mahamat Zene told AFP.
The army pursued the raiders and attacked them on Thursday in Barkalam, near the Nigerian border, he said, “killing 15 terrorists” and “freeing 12 civilians.”

A little later, there was another encounter at Bilabrim in which five Boko Haram fighters were killed and two Chadian soldiers were wounded.
The Chadian army launched an offensive against Boko Haram in April after the deaths of some 100 soldiers in an attack by the group on one of its bases.
President Idriss Deby then claimed to have pushed the jihadists out.
But attacks have continued despite the military operation.
In Chad’s Lake Province, more than 360,000 people have fled their homes to avoid attacks and also flooding, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The president admitted in early August that “Boko Haram would still do a lot of damage” in Chad.
Boko Haram’s insurgency has killed more than 36,000 people and displaced more than two million from their homes.
The violence has since spread to Niger, Chad and Cameroon.

Brother Housemate, Dorathy has been caught several times paying close attention to the cameras in the BBNaija house than any of the housemates since the show began till date.

In a strange photo shared online, Dorathy was this time caught on camera staring at the camera in the box room to the point that it looked like a horror movie.

However, there have been rumours from the concerned audience that the housemate, fakes her personality on the show since she is so camera conscious.

Do you think she hides her real personality or not?

The meeting between the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, the Trade Union Congress, Nigeria Labour Congress and members of the Nigerian Governors Forum to cancel the proposed strike slated for September 28, has just ended on an inconclusive note.
After serious deliberations, both arms of Labour agreed that the meeting be adjourned till Monday next week to enable the Executives consult with their various organs.
But Ngige believes the meeting was successful and that the strike would be averted.
He told reporters shortly after Thursday’s meeting which held at the Banquet Hall of the State House that government has agreed to a proposal to make provision for palliatives to cushion the effects of the increment in fuel and electricity hike.
Ngige said: “Fruitful meeting. They are going back to their organs. When they consult their organs tomorrow, next tomorrow maybe they will take a new decision.
“We have requested them to shelve the strike. We have appealed to them to shelve the strike.”
“The government side agreed proposals with them on the palliative to cushion the effect of the rise in petroleum products and electricity.”
“The meeting agreed to adjourn to Monday, 3pm we had a fruitful discussion”.
Recall that Labour had settled for an industrial action on September 28,2020 after ratification by the National Executive Council.
While faulting the timing of the increment, they had requested the government to fix the ailing refineries so as to reduce the burden of importation on the country.
They had also bemoaned that the recent increases were ploys to erode the gains of the N30,000 minimum wage recently approved by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Natural Oil and Gas Suppliers Association of Nigeria (NOGASA) yesterday bemoaned its huge losses to the tune of N320 billion as a result of the control of the prices of products by the federal government.

The body, therefore, backed the decision of the federal government to allow prices to be determined by the forces of demand and supply, and pleaded with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), to have a think about their planned strike, saying that the action will have unquantifiable adverse impact on businesses.

A statement by the spokesman of the organisation, Chief Ukadike Chinedu, in Abuja, said its members would be forced to lay off staff, with the increasingly difficult business terrain.

It stated: “NOGASA is seriously concerned about recent happenings in the downstream sector of the industry, especially with growing adverse effects on our businesses, workers and the Nigerian economy at large.

“The crushing impact on businesses and business investors in the downstream sector following the onset of Covid-19 global pandemic has been, to say the least, disastrous for the industry.

“Some of our concerns are: heavy losses of over N320 billion investments from products purchases at government specified prices, and sales at compelled price reductions, which could not be justified by the costs of transaction.

“Numerous businesses are dying in silence. A lot of them are no longer trading as a result of the heavy losses. There is an upward slide on the graph of job losses in the sector.”

It noted that while the association fully agrees with the organised labour that the government should repair refineries and allow others to build private ones to encourage a more robust competitive business environment, it strongly believes that further disruptions in an already struggling economy will create far more problems for workers and businesses.

“It is in light of these and many other economic challenges and negative outcomes to the entire Nigerian economy that NOGASA appeals to the NLC/TUC to reconsider their proposed action over the increase in petroleum pump price and electricity rates by the government

Disney-actress-turned-drama-star, Zendaya has made history by becoming the youngest actress to bag an Academy Award. The 24-year-old star of HBO’s “Euphoria” beat out acclaimed actresses like Jennifer Aniston and Laura Linney, becoming the youngest to win best lead actress in a drama.

The actress, who was flanked by a semicircle of teary-eyed supporters and wearing a crystal bandeau top with a billowing black-and-white polka-dot skirt, clearly had not prepared an acceptance speech, New York Times reports.

“This is pretty crazy,” Zendaya said as she clasped her hands over her statuette, as though hardly daring to believe it was real.

She beat out older counterparts Jennifer Aniston, Olivia Colman, Sandra Oh and Laura Linney to claim the crown — not to mention the incumbent winner, Jodie Comer, who set the record last year when she won for “Killing Eve” at age 26.

“Thank you to all of the other incredible women in this category,” Zendaya said. “I admire you so much.”

The actress said she was inspired by others her age who were working to make a difference in the world. “I just want to say that there is hope in the young people out there. And I just want to say to all our peers out there doing the work in the streets: I see you, I admire you, I thank you,” the actress said.

The North East leaders under the axis of the Coalition of North East Elders for Peace and Development have requested for a decisive actions to end the Boko Haram terrorism.

They were showing concern over the security condition across the country, the coalition said “the excuses being tendered by the Service Chiefs”, were no longer tenable to them.

The Chairman of CNEEPD, Zana Goni, in a statement titled ‘We are tired of excuses, sack Service Chiefs now’, obtained by The PUNCH, called on the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), to as a matter of urgency implement the recent resolution of both Chambers of the National Assembly.

He begged him to review the country’s security architecture with a view to improving the security of Nigeria which they noted, had been so bad.

Goni regretted that their silence before now was misinterpreted by some people and sections of the country because of the geographical background of the security chiefs, explaining that their action was nothing close to that.

The Elders said they have been silence for some time in the belief that things would get better as the security heads and the president have always promised.

The statement reads, “But we have seen that in spite of the funding of the military by our dear president and the assurances by our service chiefs that things would change, nothing seems to happen to that direction. This is regrettable.

“The security situation in the country is further reinforcing the urgent need to inject new hands with fresh ideas to handle the nation’s security architecture. We have seen that the security situation under the current service chiefs has reached an unbearable state.

“There is no denying the fact that at this moment, the entire nation is distressed by the incessant mindless killing of our citizens and pillaging of defenceless communities by insurgents, bandits, and kidnappers. There is no denying the fact also that these have resulted in indescribable agony, anguish and torment to the Nigerian citizens.

“And following these mentioned above, we, the Coalition of North East Elders for Peace and Development, in the strongest terms, restate the call to President Muhammadu Buhari to honour the resolution of the National Assembly and positions of the majority of Nigerians to immediately remove the service chiefs and bring in new hands to effectively confront the security challenges staring us in our face as a nation.

They also noted that the current Service Chiefs were the longest in Nigeria’s history adding that they may have “become war-weary and bereft of new ideas to tackle the insecurity bedeviling the country

Sri Lanka is a nation known for its coconuts. There is a shortage of 700 million coconuts which has increased prices substantially.

To address this issue State Minister Arundika Fernando (in charge of Coconut, Kithul, Palmyrah, and Rubber Cultivation Promotion and Related Industrial Product Manufacturing & Export Diversification) climbed a coconut tree in Warakapola and discussed his plan to resolve it.

“We hope to utilize every available plot of land for the cultivation of coconuts and boost the industry to one which would generate foreign exchange to the country.” The minister said.

It was then added that the Rs.100 price of coconuts was in part due to rising international demand. He said that the government would reduce domestic prices and increase the wages of workers in the industry.

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Campaign Council for the Edo State governorship election, Nyesom Wike has reacted to the just concluded election in the state.

Wike, who is also Rivers State Governor, said congratulated the PDP candidate and incumbent governor, Godwin Obaseki, on his electoral victory in the poll.

Addressing PDP supporters in Benin, Wike said God used Obaseki to end godfatherism in Edo State.

“Let me now formally introduce the newest governor, the man who God used to fight godfatherism. If for nothing, we have achieved that there is nothing called godfatherism again in Edo politics.

“Edo people have spoken and Edo people have said ‘look, we cannot alter our fate on one man’s hands. That was what Edo people did yesterday,” he said.

Obaseki polled 307,955 votes to defeat his closest rival APC’s Osagie Ize-Iyamu, who garnered 223,619 to win a second term as governor of Edo State.

INEC Returning Officer for the poll, Professor Akpofure Rem-Rukeh, declared the governor as the winner on Sunday at the office of the electoral umpire in Benin City, which doubled as the final collation centre.

“That Godwin Obaseki of PDP having satisfied the requirements of the law in meeting the 25 per cent in two-third of the local government areas in the state and having a margin of lead higher than the cancelled votes is hereby declared the winner and returned elected,” Professor Rem-Rukeh who is also the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Petroleum Resources, stated.

A total of 14 political parties fielded candidates to jostle for the office of the governor in the state.

It is the first governorship poll to be conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) since the outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19) in the country

The Governor of Lagos State Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has allowed the full reopening of worship centres in the state.
He announced this during a briefing in Lagos on Saturday.

The governor stated that mosques can hold their prayers five times daily while churches can also start weekly services.

The Government also granted permission for the re-opening of basic and secondary schools, although with a note of caution to private proprietors and public administrators.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, during a briefing on Saturday, ordered the resumption of all public and private schools from September 21, 2020, but only pupils in Junior Secondary School Three (JSS 3) and Senior Secondary School Two (SSS 2) are allowed to resume for physical classes in public schools.
The Governor said the public schools’ resumption would allow the JSS 3 pupils to study ahead of Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) slated for October 12, 2020.
Pupils in SSS 2, Sanwo-Olu said, will use the period to prepare for their transitional exams to SSS 3.
Unlike the resumption schedule for the public schools, the Governor permitted all levels of class in private schools to resume, but with strong advice to private school owners to consider implementing a staggered daily resumption schedule and classes on alternate days during the week.
But, all pre-primary school classes, including nursery, daycare centres and kindergarten, in both public and private schools are not allowed to open.
Sanwo-Olu said: “It has become necessary to issue clarifications as regards the resumption of schools, in order to clear any confusion that may have arisen since the resumption date was announced. Public Schools will adopt a phased protocol for resumption of physical classes. Students in JSS 3 and SSS 2 in public schools in Lagos are to resume physical classes from September 21.
“In the same manner, all private primary and secondary schools are allowed to reopen from September 21. We have strongly recommended that school owners and managers put safety first and open in phases similar to the announced schedule for public schools.
“School owners and managers are advised to seriously consider implementing a staggered daily resumption schedule, classes on alternate days during the week, and utilization of distance learning methods as a complement to physical classes. All pre-primary – nursery, daycare and kindergarten – classes and schools in both public and private schools must remain closed.”
The Governor said all re-opened schools must comply with safety protocols and hygiene guidelines as instructed by the State Government through the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA). He said the Department would monitor and evaluate Schools’ preparedness.
He said: “For all other public school classes in primary school and JSS 1, JSS 2, and SSS 1, announcements for resumption will be made as soon as the State Government is satisfied that all necessary resumption protocols have been put in place.
“In the meantime, these yet-to-resume classes in public schools are expected to continue their lessons on our various distance learning platforms (online, radio, television and WhatsApp) pending the announcement of dates for physical resumption.”
From next week, Sanwo-Olu said all primary and secondary schools in the State that have more than two-storey structures will be subjected to integrity test to ensure the safety of pupils. The Governor spoke against the backdrop of the Saturday collapse of Excel Secondary School – a private school – in Ejigbo area of the State.
The school, Sanwo-Olu observed, flouted the State’s structural regulations, resulting in its collapse. He directed the complete demolition of the failed structure, while directing the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development to embark on integrity test on all schools’ structures

The governor had on Friday, August 7 allowed mosques and churches to commence their Friday and Sunday services only. He, however, warned that the safety protocols released by the government must be strictly adhered to
Worship centers in the state had been shut since March as part of measures to contain the spread of COVID-19.

There is early indication that the highest bidder may carry the day in the gubernatorial election in Edo State. The incumbent governor and candidate of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in the state, Godwin Obaseki and that of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Osagie Ize-Iyamu are the two strong contenders for the gubernatorial seat out of 14 candidates.

In all the centres visited in the Benin axis, it was the same trend of cash inducement such that potential voters smiled home having collected from both parties. At Emokpae Model Primary School, Mission Road where the governor cast his votes, there were different centres for cash-for-votes. Such centres were set up in the Hausa community both at Nevis Street and near Holy Cathedral. Each voter got two thousand Naira and four packs of Indomie noodles. A vehicle loaded with cash was noticed at one of the vote-buying centres. The interesting thing was that supporters of each of the parties were hunting each other degenerating into heated allegation and counter-allegation of vote-buying.

The situation was the same at Ologbosere Primary School, Ugbekun ward 7, Igbesanmwan Model Primary School, and George Idah Model Primary School, all in Oredo local government area. Reports from Edo South and North senatorial districts observed the same method.

An election observer who said at George Idah Model Primary School, Government Reserved Area, GRA, Benin, Dr. Nwambu Gabriel, expressed concern over the development. Nwambu, director-general, Centre for Credible Leadership and Citizens Awareness, said there were allegations of vote-buying around in places he had visited and had called the attention of INEC to the development.

According to him, “There are persons who are disbursing some inducements; we call it inducements. There are people who are compelling some voters and then they would come and thumbprint and vote and then also raise their ballot papers in a manner that the pay master has seen that the agreement has been conformed with so that the money would be disbursed. So, we have also called the attention of the presiding officer. But as you know very well, the election observer observes elections and does not interfere in the process of elections.

The most we do is that we do our reports and send it to Professor Yakubu in Abuja”.

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu had earlier Saturday morning in Abuja in his preliminary address at the “Edo Governorship Election Virtual Situation Control Room” which held through Zoom condemned reports of vote-buying and selling also frowned at the violation of Covid-19 safety protocols especially with regards to the social distancing rule.

Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, has said that the outcome of the September 19 governorship election in Edo would provide hope for the general elections of 2023.

Wike advised President Muhammadu Buhari to use the election as a model for a refined electoral process.

Speaking during a meeting organised for leaders and elected representatives of the Peoples Democratic Party in Benin, capital of Edo, Wike described the poll as a fight for the destiny of the Niger Delta region.

He asked the party to mobilise the people of Edo for election with the aim of liberating the state from godfatherism.

He charged them to monitor the distribution of electoral materials and be vigilant to protect their votes.

He said, “The electoral battle may not be easy. But God is with us. With the people also on the ground, we will win.

“Let me tell you, God forbid that APC wins; if they do, all of you would have failed because your political life will be in jeopardy.

“They will come with federal might, but do not fear because we have the electorate on our side. They did the same in Rivers State; the people resisted them by protecting their votes

His spokesman, Benjamin Atu, said this in a statement on Friday.

He accused All Progressives Congress (APC) former national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, of plotting to use the federal might to intimidate him and Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Atu said: “The Deputy Governor has not been arrested but we are aware of an ongoing plan to arrest him over unfounded lies so that Oshiomhole and his cohorts will have the freedom to rig the Edo North Senatorial district election.”

“President Muhammadu Buhari has kicked against rigging of the election in Edo state, promising to congratulate whoever emerges as the winner.

“But Adams Oshiomhole and Osagie Ize-Iyamu (APC candidate) who felt betrayed by the President’s statement decided to use the back door to arrest the Deputy Governor in the name of illegal possession of arms.

“It is a lie from the pit of hell and a heap of rubbish to say the name of the Deputy Governor in such a mundane practice of democracy”

“Comrade Philip Shaibu has been in active politics since Nigeria returned to Democracy in 1999 and has never been linked to the issue of an arms deal. In less than 24 hours to the Edo State Governorship election, is it today that Oshiomhole now wants to organize an arrest?

“I want to assure that Comrade Philip Shaibu can’t be arrested because the People of Edo State will resist it. Oshiomhole is planning to create unrest in the State on election day by his attempt to use the DSS to arrest the Deputy Governor.

“We are calling on President Buhari and the International community to immediately prevail and call Oshiomhole and his thugs to order to avert unrest that may follow their actions.”

As the housemates are preparing for their Betway task, the housemates were given a handout each for them to read and assimilate, in preparation for the Betway task.

Although many people know that Laycon is a smart and intelligent person but nobody would have thought that he will go inside the house with the same character.

Someone who graduated as the best student in his department would surely be someone who loves books but viewers didn’t know that he will be a night reader.

While other housemates were sleeping, Laycon was caught reading the handout given to them, this action amazed the viewers as they didn’t know that he’s such a bookworm. No doubt he’s known to be intelligent and bookish but waking up at night to read especially when the task is a fun task baffles many people.

The Regional Director for Africa, World Health Organisation (WHO), Dr Matshidiso Moeti, has revealed that in the WHO African Region, more than 41,000 health workers have been infected with COVID-19, accounting for 3.8% of all reported cases.

While adding that, Front-line health workers are at greater risk of infection because of the care they provide to patients.

She gave this revelation in her message to commemorate the 2020 World Patient Safety day, saying, Some countries, like Sierra Leone and Cote d’Ivoire have made progress in reducing the proportion of health worker infections.

Others such as Eritrea, Rwanda and Seychelles have not recorded a single case of COVID-19 among health workers.

According to her; “On 17 September, we celebrate World Patient Safety Day because to realize quality health care, the first step is to do no harm, yet in hospitals in low- and middle-income countries globally, every year, there are 134 million adverse events due to unsafe care, contributing to 2.6 million lives lost.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has reaffirmed that to keep patients safe, health workers must be protected, and so this year’s theme is Health Worker Safety: A Priority for Patient Safety.

“To protect health workers from COVID-19 and contribute to enhanced patient safety, in collaboration with partners and national and provincial authorities, WHO has trained more than 50 000 health workers in the African Region in infection prevention and control, with plans to train over 200 000 more.

“Around 31 million items of personal protective equipment have been shipped to Member States and guidance documents on best care practices are in-development, to support the creation of enabling environments for safe health workers and safe patients.”

Moeti added that, often the solutions to enhance patient safety are simple and cost effective. For example, after a Quality Management Unit was established in Sierra Leone, deaths among children in 13 high burden hospitals dropped from 15.6% in 2017 to 9.6% in 2019.

Patient safety is an essential component in strengthening health systems to achieve universal health coverage, and achieving it requires collaboration and open communication between multidisciplinary health-care teams, patients and patients’ organizations, professional associations and other stakeholders.

Action is needed to understand the magnitude of patient harm, including through transparent incident reporting to learn from mistakes with no-fault and no-blame handling of adverse events.

Patients and their families must be enabled to take preventive, systematic measures to participate in improving the safety of care and to reduce risks to all individuals, with special attention to at-risk groups, including people with disabilities and older people.

By pursuing patient-centred policies, redesigning processes, ramping-up hygiene practices and transforming organizational cultures, health care can be made safer.

She called on all of us to work together to protect health workers, so they can protect patients, in supportive, enabling environments for the delivery of quality health care.

Nengi accuses Ozo of masturbating

It all began when Nengi visited Ozo’s bed yesterday in the evening and found something that looked like ‘cum stains on his bedsheets.’

She accused Ozo of pleasuring himself in the house but Ozo denied the accusations.

“Ozo there are cum stains on your bed,” she said.

“Anything you see here is from the laundry. This place is too small for such a thing”, Ozo defended.

“It’s a lie. Who was talking about it the other day, was it Praise or who? That you can just be doing your thing… tell me, have you tried it before?”, Nengi pressurized Ozo to accept.

She continued… “Have you tried it before? Answer me first then I’ll tell you. Ozo, those stains I saw under your bed…I’m suspecting you. You have tried it in this house. You have tried it. Don’t tell me lies, you’ve tried it. If you haven’t you would’ve told me.

When Ozo kept denying, Nengi then admitted she has once tried to masturbate but overcame the urge.

“I wanted to try it one day, but I said no it wouldn’t work”, Nengi said.

The monarch said that tensions had been high leading up to the polls until he called the two main candidates, Governor Godwin Obaseki and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu to order.

The committee had supervised Tuesday’s signing of a peace accord by Obaseki, Ize-Iyamu and 12 other candidates as well as their party chairmen at the Oba Akenzua II Cultural Centre, Benin City.

Federal government of Nigeria on Monday, 14th September, said that a final decision has not been taken on the reopening of tertiary institutions in the country because the COVID-19 situation is been reviewed.

Minister of State for Education, spoke on Monday during the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 briefing in Abuja, said the universities need to get clearance and procedures from the National Universities Commission (NUC) before they can open again.

Furthermore he said that after such clearance, the governing council of each institution will then have to benchmark the guidelines for implementation and put necessary structures and facilities before schools can reopen.

“…But at the tertiary level, that guidance will also be done in collaboration with the National Universities Commission so that it will give clearance that we are satisfied with your performance with regard to the guideline.

For the state governments who had been reopening primary and secondary schools in their respective states, the Minister noted that their actions are in compliance with PTF position.

He however added that full COVID-19 measures must be put in place and strictly followed as schools reopen across the country.

Nwajiuba stated this while reacting to a question about some state governments that have already announced full reopening of primary and secondary schools.

He said: “All primary schools up to post-primary schools have the participation of sub-nationals and at that level, they need to check and meet all the requirements before they open.

“You may have heard several states taking steps around reopening, they are all in order. This is what is expected from what the PTF said last week and following the guideline everybody will now begin the processes of reopening.

“However, they must be guided because in every state we have quality assurance officers that are reporting to the Federal Ministry of Education and we will not hesitate to shut down any place that is not in compliance with guidelines.”

The federal Government says the deregulation of the petroleum downstream sub-sector would enable it to rake in over N1trn annually for the development of the country.
The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, told newsmen in Abuja on Thursday that with deregulation, the government would fix the moribund refineries in the country t make them commercially viable and create more jobs for the citizens.
“Talking about refineries; what we’ve done is to sequence the rehabilitation of the refineries. We’re going to start first with Port Harcourt refinery.
“In Port Harcourt, we have two refineries; the old refinery and the new refinery with 60,000 and 250,000 barrels capacity respectively.
“Now, there’s going to be a third refinery within Port Harcourt which is going to collocate, it’s going to be a private refinery in Port Harcourt.

“That project will be signed in the fourth quarter of 2020. And by the first quarter of 2021, work will start in earnest. Discussions are ongoing with rehabilitations of Warri and Kaduna as well.
“It’s time for Nigerians to face reality and do the right thing. What is deregulation going to do? It’s going to free up a lot more money.

“At least, from the very beginning, it’ll save us up to a trillion and more every year. Already, we’ve taken up the budgetary provision for subsidy which is about N500bn in the budget.
“Also, we’ve taken off the excess forex price that special rate given to NNPC which also came at a cost. So, all the money that we used to defend the Naira at that time to subsidise the dollar will now be freed up for development.

The meeting with the governors, who are members of the National Food Security Council, was held inside the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Governors who attended the meeting are Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State, who is also the Vice-Chairman of the council; Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State; Badaru Abubakar of Jigawa; Simon Lalong of Plateau; Darius Ishaku of Taraba; and Dave Umahi of Ebonyi.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha; Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele; National Security Adviser, Major General Babagana Monguno (retd.); and some ministers among others also attended the meeting.

Speaking during the opening session before the meeting went into closed doors, the Chief of Staff to the President, COS, Ibrahim Gambari, said the current price increases are transient as the prices are expected to crash as new grains come into the market.

He said that the recent surge of national food prices is gradually evolving to a food crisis with a capacity to threaten the nation’s food security.

Gambari said the meeting was to ascertain the root causes of the recent spike in food prices and to craft strategies to mitigate its effect.

He explained that although various concerns were raised about the possible root causes of the increase in commodity items. Gambari noted that the government has been informed that prices are actually on the decline as new grains have been introduced to the market.

The COS said new maize which was previously sold for N25,000 per bag is now being sold between N12,000 and N17,000 and that it was expected to fall between N7,000 and N8,000 per bag by November 2020.

Indigenous people of Southern part of Kaduna State under the aegies of Southern Kaduna Peace Practitioners (SOKIPEP), have appealed to the Federal and State Governments, not to allow those carrying out the killings and kidnapping, to go scot free.

While enjoining government and security personnel to treat them as criminals, they thanked Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) for responding swiftly.

National Coordinator of SOKIPEP, in a statement yesterday, Dauda Fadia, said a fresh attack took place at Gora Zagwaza Village in Zango Kataf Local Government of Kaduna State on Tuesday, September 8, 2020. While a counter attack happened at Kurmin Masara Village in Zango Kafaf, which led to the death of one herder and a local farmer.

He said: “We condemn in the strongest term the unprovoked attacks by yet to be identified criminals which led to serious bodily harm on one of the victims currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Zonkwa, while the other three victims are still missing.

“Another attack and counter attack at Kurmin Masara Village in Zango Kafaf, regrettably led to the death of one herder and a local farmer on the Wednesday, September 9,2020. These are very unfortunate incidents considering that they happened at a time peace had returned to the once troubled Southern Kaduna area due to the concerted efforts of the military, key stakeholders, community, civil society and faith based organizations as well as well meaning individuals.

“We sincerely commend the swift response of men of Operation Safe Haven who got to both scenes in minutes and arrest was made from both parties. The quick response prevented escalation and more casualty. We appeal to the military outfit to sustain the tempo.

” It is so sad that while efforts are on going to restore permanent peace to Southern Kaduna, some of our misguided youths still find it convenient to attack herdsmen who were only grazing their cattle in Zagwaza without any form of provocation, injured one and three still missing and another at Kurmin Masara which claimed two lives one herder and a local.

The Federal Government has expressed optimism with regard to its ongoing plans to reopen educational institutions following months of a compulsory shut-down caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

As earlier reported that the Federal Government has sanctioned a phased reopening of schools in a bid to find a balance against the status quo, and also in view of the flattening COVID-19 curve in recent weeks.

This was disclosed in Abuja on Thursday by the Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, following a meeting of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 with the Northern Traditional Leaders Committee (NTLC) on National Primary Health.

Daily Times gathered that the meeting was chaired by the Minister of Information and Culture on behalf of the Chairman of PTF and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha.

The meeting was organized to solicit the support of traditional rulers towards preventing community spread of COVID-19.

In his reaction to a question posed by Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Sa’ad Abubakar on the reopening of schools, Nwajiuba said the federal government is still critically evaluating the situation.

“At the moment, we have not come to the point where we can say we are convinced that schools can manage themselves and reopen comfortably.

“Our teams have gone out and we will use the whole of this week and next week to do a proper evaluation.

“We are going round to see the level of compliance but most importantly we are waiting to get an update on all the facilities in every part of Nigeria. So, it is a work in progress,” he said.

The Minister also said that the government has leaned towards the opinions of experts who are of the view that 15 percent of transmission of COVID-19 stems from school environments, which is why they proposed remodeling of classes.

“We believe the experts that the school system is a suspect place for transmission and that is why we are working with them, particularly on guidelines.

“We are proposing that classes be redesigned if there are no enough classrooms for social distancing.

The Bbn season 5 ‘lockdown’ housemates, Nengi and Vee are under threat as Nengi blew up last night over a sarcastic comment Vee made about her and Ozo.

Ozo, Laycon and Vee found themselves in the same group for the Patricia Bitcoin task but Ozo was seen to be the weak one on the team as he left them in the middle of the rehearsal to be with his love interest, Nengi.

Reacting to the outcome of the result that saw their opposing team win the task, Vee said Ozo’s unseriousness with the task was the reason they lost. Nengi felt that was harsh and flared up though Vee had claimed it was sarcasm and she never meant what she said.

Nengi’s anger stems from the fact that she also found Neo with Vee when he was supposed to be with them to rehearse their wager task presentation.

It is not clear if the misunderstanding between the two ladies is over as they never uttered a word to each other after that incident.

Patience Ozorkwor charges son to court.

In 2012, it made the news that Patience Ozorkwor, one of Nollywood finest veteran actress was facing domestic challenge in her home. This news was revealed by a source close to the Ozorkwor family.

As is public knowledge, Patience Ozorkwor lost her husband sometime before 2012 and is the mother of 2 daughters and 2 sons, namely Chuka and Nduka.

The story behind the domestic issue was that for half a decade and much to Patience aka Mama G’s disapproval, Chuka dated a woman called Joy. The thespian voiced concern about respect issues with her son’s love interest.

The star went out of her way to pick a woman called Ada for her son who according to her was better suited. Chuka disapproved of the move, but to keep the peace with his mother, he dumped Joy and hooked up with Ada.

The relationship between Mama G and Ada started to dwindle as Ada started to plant her roots in the relationship and she also began to develop a mind of her own and ‘grow wings.’  A split between mother and son ensued as Chuka vowed to keep his lady and to further complicate matters, Ada got pregnant.

As a last resort, Mama G sought a court injunction to stop Chuka from claiming his father’s inheritance as is customary for the first son in the Igbo tradition. Chuka wedded Ada in court and has appealed to his kinsmen in the hope to solve the tricky situation.

During that period, the actress was actively preparing the wedding of her youngest son, vowing to make it the talk of the town in an effort to spite Chuka even further.

With the turn of events in the actress’ family, it became pretty obvious that not all you see on screen is a lie.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday said Nigerian elites should judge his administration with fairness.

The President was speaking at the closing of the first-year ministerial performance review retreat which was held in Abuja.

“I want the Nigerian elites, to judge us fairly,” Buhari said, saying that his administration has done more for the country with less resources.

He said the average production of oil in the country, from 1999 to 2014, was 2.1 million barrels per day sold at an average price of $100.

“When we came, it collapsed to $37, $38 per barrel, you know it. And the militants attacked the administration, and the production went down to half a million barrels per day.

“I want you to please have a rethink, what was the condition of the infrastructure then, in spite of those earnings. The roads, the rail is dead and there was no power, up till now no power; where does the money go?”

The President said he was “doing his best” to fight corruption by “trying to follow the system” in contrast to his brief military regime in 1984 when he arbitrarily rounded up politicians, threw them in jail, and required them to prove their innocence.

Now “I’m being called ‘baba go slow’,” he said.

Earlier, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has said there is no way Nigerians can survive with the hike in the cost of fuel and electricity.

PDP added that the hike will worsen the situation in the last five years, where compatriots are resorting to suicide, slavery mission abroad as well as selling off their children as options.
